05/2005 Project: Deficiency Patterns Client: Personal Project Brief: Exploration, Experimentation, & Exploitation of Representation Methods. Format: Web Media; Interactive OS X Application Developed in Max/MSP, Printed Materials Description: A major on-going personal project – it sparked off when experimenting with animated backgrounds on some HTML pages, I discovered a screen flicker effect, as shown on the left. The flicker effect works only on LCD/TFT display units, with varying degrees of strength and does not happen at all on traditional CRT Displays. The discovery of this phenomenon led me on to a journey exploring representation methods. |
Representation, as I know it, is a fundamental basis in art, and so I would like to explore, experiment and exploit representation methods to create something new and unexpected, by creating a space which invokes the happening of accidents. As a start, I built a website dedicated to this effect, and to serve as a platform to showcase my experiments and findings: http://lcdsarenotflickerfree.com/ Phase 1 Experiments include: 1. LCD/TFT display flicker 2. Native Moiré on digital displays 3. Browser image size discrepancies 4. Greeked text Phase 2 will continue the exploration, taking the project out of the digital domain, studying the borderline and possibilities in the grey areas, and challenge the existing methods of representation.
