The limitations of the computer screen, being based on a matrix of square pixels intrigued me. The current configuration – the physical nature of the screen itself, along with the algorithm devised to control how the image is shown within the matrix – is a very logical method of representation, yet it has a lot of weakpoints which can be exploited.

How does a square pixel screen resemble an image of a pixel grid rotated at an angle?

To demonstrate the moiré effect caused, I developed this application in Max/MSP which allows myself to exploit the limitations of the screen to create new patterns.

Key features are dual display support, full screen mode, loading a variety of image files and Quicktime movies, exporting images in a range of files types, and the output of the screen to a Quicktime movie, and saving of presets.

Feel free to give this app a test drive.
